How difficult is it to learn violin at 17/18?

I would like to learn how to play violin, and I am at the latter stage of 17. I have one year left before I will be going to college, so I would at least like to get the basics of violin under my belt and then continue my practicing at my college (or, at least during my college years).

I was in choir for 2 years back in middle school, but I was never good at sight-reading. I've been trying to learn the tin whistle a bit, too.

I would really like to learn how to play the violin, enough so that I could entertain myself or others.

If I do pursue lessons, I will most likely learn how to fiddle, because the local teacher teaches folk music (bluegrass), which is fine with me.

So, my questions:

1. Will it be too difficult to learn violin at 17?

2. Is it hard to continue lessons with the workload of college and a job?

3. If I learn how to fiddle, can I still apply what I've learned to playing classical or more modern pieces?

4. Would it be okay to practice violin walking outside? I don't want to stay in my house too much, and I enjoy going on walks. Is it okay to bring the violin and practice outside?

Thanks for any answers/advice!
