Is it possible to learn violin by yourself?

I play guitar and drums. I learned to play those instruments by myself without any problems.
the thing is, i don't know how to read music. i can read guitar tabs, but that's it. and i don't know anything about music theory. everytime someone tries to teach me a little bit of music theory, i feel like i want to give up altogether. it just takes the joy out of playing music!!
so i was wondering.. can i actually learn violin without a tutor? has anyone ever done this before? how did you do it?
